In this last MultiPod episode of 2022, we are having a conversation with Prof. Margaret Satterthwaite on the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur for the Independence of Judges and Lawyers.

Prof. Satterthwaite is a Professor of Clinical Law and director of the Global Justice Clinic and has also served as the faculty director of the Robert and Helen Bernstein Institute for Human Rights and as a faculty director of the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice (CHRGJ).

In October 2022, she was appointed UN Special Rapporteur and follows Diego García-Sayán, who previously filled this position.

Human rights are increasingly under pressue globally, and not only in autocratic regimes. The last five years have seen an increase in human rights violations, which constitutes an alarming trend. Prof. Satterthwaite talks about the importance of an independent judiciary in order to protect human rights, the situation of judges and lawyers in different areas of the world as well as the tools the UN has to counter human rights violations.
